I had to share this quote from Cherie Blair on the Clinton/ Lewinski scandal:

So, we evidently have Cherie Blair to thank for Hillary’s “Stand by your man” approach to adultery.  As least, she recognized that “Bill was so bloody stupid”.

President Bush sums up his legacy in one sentence.

Yahoo and the Politico held a joint online interview of President Bush. In the interview, he was asked about his low poll numbers. He answered, "Popularity is fleeting, principles are forever. This perfectly sums up Bush’s legacy as a man who was willing to make the hard decisions regardless of political fallout. He has made the choice that is right for the future of this nation, without regard to his legacy. This makes him the anti-Clinton. It seemed as though all of President Clinton’s decisions were based on polls and the Clinton’s perception of what the decision would do to hi legacy. This led the nation down a rough road. His decision to cut and run in Somalia and his reluctance to deal with bin Laden when given the opportunity are examples of Clinton putting his legacy ahead of the nations future. He put a ‘times are good” mentality ahead of making foreign policy decisions that may have proved unpopular to his constituents. Another example would be the war in Kosovo. His refusal to commit ground troops had a cost of thousands of lives.

In contrast, President Bush has confronted our enemies, knowing that it would cost him popularity. The difference between the two men obviously extends past what goes on in the oval office when they are in the company of interns…

 

NIMBY's 1, Capitalism 0

Nimby means “Not in my back yard”. Local Duluth residents have apparently applied enough pressure to ensure that a Wal-Mart Supercenter will not be built in Duluth. Now Wal-mart will begin the process of finding enough land in a neighboring area to build their Supercenter, thereby depriving the city of Duluth of any associated tax receipts.

For now, there are already two Wal-Mart stores within six miles of the proposed location, in Duluth and neighboring Suwanee. My guess is Wal-Mart will target Suwanee for the Supercenter and close both regular Wal-Marts. Good luck finding a tenant for the Duluth Wal-Mart when that happens.

I think the Atlanta Journal Constitution had a good idea on building a website that ranks hospitals. The execution leaves something to be desired. The website keys in on customer satisfaction rating. That should be a component in rating hospitals. In explicably, the ratings appear to be un-weighted.

A hospital in a small rural area will most likely have a much higher rating than a hospital that performs riskier procedures. For example, small rural hospitals may concentrate primarily with stitching up clumsy children, as opposed to a major regional hospital that is doing heart transplants. Riskier procedures inherently carry higher mortality rates, which drive down customer satisfaction. What is my advice for the AJC? Weight the grades to take this in account, and build another site that measure quality of care based on benchmarks other than customer satisfaction.
